SYNOPSIS

This workshop will  ignite the creative spark in those approaching fiction writing for the first time, or those who are returning to it after a while.

One of the most daunting challenges in writing fiction is how to spark off a story—and this workshop aims to address this challenge by providing practicable tips which anyone can use to create fiction.

The exercises encourage individual expression and creative freedom. Using the techniques outlined, the budding writers would learn some of the methods used by established authors to enter a meditative state from where the most genuine writing flows.

The expected outcome is for each participant to write one or more drafts of a short story which the trainer will provide feedback on during the workshop.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introductions and goal setting: What do we want from this workshop?
  • What’s a story? : Discussion around what a story is, or can be
  • Where do stories come from? : Discussion about where authors get the germs of their stories
  • Writing from the body, not the mind: Focusing on the body and emotions, not on logic and analysis
  • Heart-storming, not brainstorming techniques: Techniques to set the imagination free: free writing, free association, lists, ‘What if’ scenarios
  • Breathing exercises and writing prompts: How to create the right state of emotions for writing to emerge, using visual, audio, and written prompts
  • Writing stories using the techniques and prompts
  • Practicing timed and free writing: How setting a time limit makes it impossible to think critically, silencing the inner critic
  • Reading out the stories created, with emotion and raw voice

This workshop is suitable for participants aged 15 and above.
